Type 2 Diabetes

A progressive metabolic condition driven by insulin resistance that quietly disrupts blood sugar control, energy levels, and long-term health.

What Is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition in which the body becomes resistant to insulin or cannot use it effectively. Insulin is the hormone responsible for moving glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, where it can be used for energy. When insulin resistance develops, blood sugar levels rise and begin to damage tissues, blood vessels, and organs over time. Type 2 diabetes does not appear overnight; it typically develops gradually, often starting with prediabetes, fatigue, weight gain, inflammation, and subtle metabolic changes long before blood sugar becomes elevated on lab tests. Because of this slow progression, many individuals are already experiencing symptoms for years before receiving a diagnosis.

This condition is extraordinarily common and continues to grow at an alarming rate. It is estimated that over 38 million Americans currently have diabetes, and 90–95% of those cases are Type 2 diabetes. Even more concerning is the fact that approximately 98 million adults have prediabetes, yet the majority are unaware of their metabolic dysfunction. Factors such as poor diet, chronic stress, sedentary lifestyle, sleep disruption, inflammation, toxins, and genetic predisposition all contribute to insulin resistance. If not addressed early, Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious complications including nerve damage, heart disease, kidney disease, vision loss, and impaired wound healing.

Common Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Because Type 2 diabetes affects nearly every system in the body, the range of symptoms can vary widely. Some people experience classic signs such as increased thirst or frequent urination, while others may primarily notice changes in energy, weight, or cognitive clarity. Common symptoms associated with insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes include:

  • Persistent fatigue or low energy

  • Increased thirst and frequent urination

  • Unexplained weight gain or difficulty losing weight

  • Sugar cravings or intense hunger

  • Blurred vision or visual changes

  • Slow wound healing or frequent infections

  • Brain fog, poor focus, or memory problems

  • Increased abdominal fat or metabolic syndrome features

Amy Taylor

“By six month's time, my goiter was gone, bowels returned to normal, energy and zest for life were back to normal, sleep was good, skin improved — all with ZERO prescription drugs. I highly recommend consulting with him; if he is not able to help you, he will tell you.”

Steve R.

Jennifer T.

“Thanks to Dr. Kuhn, my peripheral neuropathy has minimized, my sugars have come under better control, and I am losing weight. What makes it easy to achieve what I have is the fact that Dr. Kuhn doesn't just tell you how, he lives it.”

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the most common questions patients ask about care at Chronic Conditions Center, so you can feel confident about your next steps.

What happens during the free consultation?

You’ll have a relaxed 15-minute phone call to discuss your main concerns, review your history at a high level, and see if our approach is a good fit before scheduling a full exam.

Do you accept insurance or how does payment work?

We are an out-of-network clinic. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds, and we provide receipts you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

How long before I typically notice improvements?

Every person is different, but many patients begin noticing early changes within the first few weeks, with more significant improvements over the following months.

Can you still help if other doctors have not?

Many of our patients have seen multiple providers before coming here. Our functional and regenerative approach focuses on root causes, not just symptom management.

Do you offer both in-person and telehealth visits?

Yes. We see patients in person in Williamsburg and Chesapeake and also offer telehealth options when appropriate, depending on your specific needs and state regulations.

How should I prepare for my first in-depth appointment?

Bring any recent lab work, a list of medications and supplements, and a short timeline of your health history so we can make the most of our time together.
